All spray guns will spray paint. A spray gun is merely a delivery device—like a brush.
There are a few things you should be aware of, however, especially if you intend to spray latex paint with a spray gun you use normally to spray clear finishes. To get a reasonable amount of paint to come through the spray gun you will probably need to use a larger fluid nozzle and needle than you use with clear finishes and an air cap designed to atomize the thicker liquid adequately. You may also need a larger amount of air than you would use when spraying a clear finish.
Many spray-gun manufacturers supply larger needle/nozzle sets and a variety of air caps. Some manufacturers ship these together with the spray gun. Others require you to buy them separately.
You also need to be aware that clean-up will be a little more difficult than with clear finishes, more like cleaning after you have sprayed a stain. You have to get all the colorant out of the gun so it doesn’t show up as specks in the next clear finish you spray. The same goes for any hoses you may be using with a remote pot.
